We are hosting yet another Software Freedom Day [1] at SF State. We did this for 2005, 2006, and 2007 with a lot of success and fun. We hope it will be the same, if not better this year. Just like last year, we will have to switch dates and move it to Thursday, September 18, 2008 because SF State does not get any foot traffic on Saturdays.

Students from Information Management Systems Association [5] and Eco Students [6] will be there along with the iLearn [7] team (moodle hackers extraordinaire) at SF State. Our students, staff and faculty will be out in the Quad by the Cesar Chavez center handing out flyers, CDs with Free Software and educating the community about the benefits of Free Software. We'll also have some machines demonstrating the Free Software Ecosystem along with the sharpest of the lot, the XO laptop running Sugar [8]. Go check it out!

Incidentally, we are doing this in conjunction with The University of the West Indies, Jamaica [9], where I am on sabbatical leave. We are kicking off the celebrations today for Software Freedom Day 2008 Jamaica style. Yea man! From their site:

Led by the Mona School of Business [10], The University of the West Indies, Mona [11] joins with over five hundred other teams in celebrating Software Freedom Day on Thursday, September 18, 2008.

As part of the celebrations CDs (also downloadable from http://www.theopendisc.com/ [12]) with free productivity, multimedia and other software of use to students and other knowledge workers will be made freely available in Lab 6, the Population Lab, and the Department of Management Studies Computer Lab, in the Faculty of Social Sciences. These CDs will also be available in the Computer Sciences Computer Lab in the Faculty of Pure & Applied Sciences.
