Submitted by sverma on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 06:57 Events | OSCON 2006

This was a session from last night on the state of software. The updates were done in 5 minutes, hence the term "lightning".

Here are my notes:

  • Very poorly presented. Some updates on the GNOME conference in Spain. A tiny mention of Summer of Code projects from Google and the fact that no women applied.

  • serverless, zero config, fully ACID
  • load DLLs or shared libs
  • Full-text search
  • Cellphones, MP3, etc.

  • planet 2.0 released today.

Annodex.net

  • Minor update, but nothing that you can't get from their site.
  • Allows for temporal tags - say, a link to an interview (audio or video) but at the 21st minute of it.

Gentoo in 5 minutes (oxymoron?)

  • Overview
  • Very new packages
  • Install time 4-8 hours with stage 3
  • 15 minutes with liveCD...where's the point in doing Gentoo?
