Massive F/OSS Installfest for Schools (March 1st)
Submitted by afife on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 - 16:01 Events | Linux | OLPC | Ubuntu

Untangle and the ACCRC are working on an installfest for Northern California schools that will take place on Saturday March 1st.   The event will refurbish hundreds of unwanted computers that would otherwise get thrown out with Ubuntu and then donate them to schools.  There will be four installfest locations (San Francisco, Berkeley, San Mateo & Novato) and we really need your help to make this happen.  We need help installing Ubuntu, breaking down broken computers and just plain cleaning up after ourselves so there is something for everyone todo, no matter how technical they are.  You can find out more info on the event and how you can volunteer here.

Software Freedom Day 2007: A great success
Submitted by sverma on Friday, September 14, 2007 - 15:31 Code | Events | SFSU

Software Freedom Day events were a great success and of course, a lot of fun. There's something liberating about heckling passers-by and enticing them with free software.

"Free software, free software! Come and get it. Free software, free software! No strings attached. Nothing to sign. No forms to fill out. Come and get it. Free software, free software!"

SF State students from the Information Management Systems Association (IMSA) will be hosting Software Freedom Day on campus (Malcolm X Plaza) on Thursday, the 13th of September, 2007 from 10am to 4pm. As faculty advisor for IMSA, I'd like to invite you to come by their tables and find out how free and open source software can be of some use to you!

Software Freedom Day (SFD) is an annual worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). SFD is a public education effort, not only to celebrate the virtues of Free and Open Source Software, but also to encourage its use, to the benefit of the public.

OSCON 2006: Building the Ubuntu Community
Submitted by sverma on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 16:22 Events | OSCON 2006

This talk was by Jeff Waugh who works on the Ubuntu team and has experience with the GNOME team in Australia.

How the Ubuntu community came about? The Ubuntu project is the brainchild of Mark Shuttleworth, who wanted to build a Linux distro that was clean, simple and easy to use. Interestingly, before building a distro, he went about building a community. A community with shared values and shared vision. His group, which largely intersects with employees of Canonical, Ltd. got together and brainstormed about the concept of what people need and how it can be done. Ubuntu has a Code of conduct which is explicitly spelled out. This lays a foundation for a common ground to work from. Next is the Ubuntu commitment - explicitly spelled out a well, and typically found printed on their free CD covers. Some of those points are:

OSCON 2006: Lightning states of...
Submitted by sverma on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 06:57 Events | OSCON 2006

This was a session from last night on the state of software. The updates were done in 5 minutes, hence the term "lightning".

Here are my notes:

State of:

Project GlassFish

GNOME

  • Very poorly presented. Some updates on the GNOME conference in Spain. A tiny mention of Summer of Code projects from Google and the fact that no women applied.
